Parent Child Interactive Therapy (PCIT) is an innovative program that gives parents the opportunity to learn and practice new parenting skills with their children.
The PCIT program is designed for children (ages 2-8) currently living with their parents or who soon will be reunified with them, and for children living in foster care (biological foster or adoptive parents can participate). PCIT is especially helpful for children who have problems with defiance, temper tantrums, whining, aggression, sibling conflict, clinging, excessive crying, anxious behaviors, and daycare, preschool or school difficulties.
PCIT helps build positive parent-child relationships and interactions, while teaching parents effective discipline and child management skills. PCIT utilizes therapy rooms that are outfitted with a video camera and sound equipment that allows a therapist to be in contact with the parent via earphones and microphones. While interacting with their child, the parent receives feedback and direction from the observing therapist through the earphone. By following the directions, parents learn new skills and observe how these produce changes in their child’s behavior. Interactions between the parent and child are also recorded for review with parents following each session. For more information, please contact us at mentalhealth@thevillagefs.org.
